It's been three years since the first day I learned how to play Texas Holdem. I was a natural. I played poker with a league for a year until one day I gained an interest in dealing. I wondered what it would be like sitting in the dealers position.
So I called up one of the local poker companies and low and behold the poker company that I called was in the process of opening up their own school. They needed students, so I went.
So I learned the basics of dealing. One day one of my instructors called and told me that there was a position on the poker room floor at the Gulfstream Casino as a hostess and that I should apply, especially if I want to become a dealer. At least I'll have my foot in the door and the staff would get familiar with me. After a while they'll give me an audition. He said that for every dealer that graduates there are already 40 waiting in line for a job.
So I got hired as a hostess and soon I was able to audition. I switch back and forth, like pinch hitter. So three nights a week I'm either a hostess on the poker room floor or a dealer.

What is it like from the other side of the table? How do the clients react when they loose?
ReplyDeleteIt's not for me. I'm glad I'm getting the opportunity to deal because I'm realizing how difficult it really is, on an emotional level. Also, in my opinion the entire gamling scene is tainted.
ReplyDeleteMy experience as a dealer has been unsettling. I've met some of the worst people I have ever met in my life just in the short year and half that I've worked in this industry.
I've met addicts in every format. I've dealt to druggies, alcoholics, wife beaters, smelly people, etc. It's part of the sacrifice a dealer goes through for the money they'll be making at the end of the day. A dealer makes anywhere from 60,000 to 130,000 a year on avg.
Many dealers will take the abuse from the players at the table just for the money.
You could have the best dealer in the world, and you'll have some scumbag at the table swearing and calling the dealer names. "You're the worst dealer ever...."I'll wait for another dealer before I begin to play again, because I don't like how you deal"....etc
The sexual harrassment s through the roof! In the meantime you're working off of tips, just like a bartender, so you have to be able to handle some of the nastiness. You'll have to build up emotional walls against those who are out to attack you.
Ultimatley, for me it's a job to make ends meet. I'ts paying for my school, so I can't complain. I'm learning a lot about how to handle nasty people/or any type of person or any type of person for that matter.
Most of all, I'm greatful to still have both of my jobs. I'm greatful that I can pay for school and somehow manage to still get good grades with the little time I have on my hands.
...sorry, I repeated a sentence twice towards the end, I couldn't edit for some reason.
ReplyDeleteSo I stopped dealing. I feel GREAT. I'm still hosting but not having to deal definately takes a load off. It also gives me another day off.
ReplyDeleteI'll be able to concentrate on things that are more productive for my future....like a downtowon Fort Lauderdale Haunted Attraction.
I was recently approached to consult, theme, and budget the concept. THIS COULD BE THE BIG ONE! Wish me luck:)
So I stopped dealing for the casino, and I'm already quite relieved. Actually I'm ecstatic!I will however continue dealing for a league. Which is significantly different than dealing for a casino. It's less stressful. Mind you the only reason I'm working this job is for extra cash and to make ends meet. This way it's fun, I mean dealing for a league. The league is composed of restaurants, bars, and club locations. So generally people are out to have a good time, drink and socialize. Unlike a casino, where people are stressed to hell 24/7 because they're losing their home lives, and disconnecting themselves from reality, due to their intense gambling issues.
